On March 28th, 2022, at the age of 87, Professor Emeritus Vladimir – Đuro Degan, former manager (1985 – 1997) and head of (1997 – 2020) the Adriatic Institute and associate member – Department of Social Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1990 – 2022), passed away.
Professor Degan was an International Law expert on international and national level, the author of valuable written works, such as books Sources of International Law (The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 1997, p. XV+564 pp.) or International Law (Third Edition, Školska knjiga Zagreb 2011, p. XII+923 pp.) and as well the author of over 150 scientific papers published in English, French and Croatian.
He was a member of the Institute of International Law; Marco Polo Fellow of the Silk Road Institute of International Law, Xi’an Jiaotong University (China), and Professor Emeritus of the University in Rijeka.
From 1991 to 1995, he was a Croatian member at the expert groups on human and minority rights and on state succession at the International Conference on the Former Yugoslavia. From 1996 to 2001, he was a member of the Croatian delegation in the negotiations on succession issues of the former Yugoslavia.
He was awarded with the Order of the French Republic: chevalier 1988; officer 1997; commander 2004 and National Lifetime Achievement Award for Science in 2013 for all scientific research in the field of social and legal sciences.
The entire scientific and academic community alongwith former and current employees of the Adriatic Institute will remember Professor’s immense contribution to the science of International Law, to which he has dedicated his entire professional and private life.
